Misty Creek Rose Australian Cobberdogs 🐾
Thank you for your interest in becoming a Guardian Home for Misty Creek Rose.
Our Guardian Program is a very special part of our breeding program. It allows selected future breeding dogs to live their everyday lives as cherished family companions, while still contributing to the future of the Australian Cobberdog breed.
Guardian homes are carefully chosen, and this arrangement is best suited to families who genuinely want to partner with us, support our program, and raise a well-balanced, loved, well-mannered dog. 🤍
What is a Guardian Home?
A Guardian Home is where one of our selected Misty Creek Rose dogs lives permanently with a family as their own much-loved pet.
Misty Creek Rose retains breeding rights for a set period of time. Once the dog’s breeding obligations are complete and all required steps are finalised, full ownership is transferred to the Guardian Family.
In simple terms:
You raise, love, train, and care for the dog as your own — and we retain breeding rights during the agreed breeding period.
Why does Misty Creek Rose use Guardian Homes?
Guardian homes allow our dogs to live the life they deserve — in real homes, with real families, surrounded by love, routine, training, and companionship.
This helps us keep our program small, intentional, and personal. It also means our breeding dogs are not raised in kennels or large-scale environments.
For us, Guardian Homes are about welfare, connection, and responsible breeding.
How is the Misty Creek Rose Guardian Program different from some other breeder programs?
At Misty Creek Rose, we see our Guardian Families as part of our extended program family — not simply as homes where our breeding dogs live.
One of the special differences in our Guardian Program is that, where appropriate, we warmly welcome our Guardian Families to be involved in the whelping and puppy-raising journey.
This means Guardian Families may have the opportunity to visit, support, and participate in parts of the early puppy journey, provided they are comfortable following our required hygiene and sanitisation protocols.
These protocols are in place to protect the health, safety, and wellbeing of both mum and her puppies. Newborn puppies are extremely vulnerable, so their environment must remain calm, clean, safe, and carefully managed.
For many Guardian Families, being able to witness their dog become a mother and watch her puppies grow is a deeply meaningful part of the journey. It creates connection, understanding, and a very special sense of involvement in the legacy their Guardian Dog is helping to build. 🤍
Participation is always guided by timing, the wellbeing of mum, the needs of the litter, and what is safe and appropriate at the time.
Is a Guardian Dog free?
Guardian arrangements usually involve either no upfront purchase price or a reduced upfront cost, depending on the individual dog, age, training completed, and agreement terms.
However, guardians must understand that this is not simply a “free dog” arrangement. It is a partnership with responsibilities, expectations, training requirements, communication obligations, and contractual terms.
A Guardian Dog is a treasured part of our future breeding program, and we are looking for families who understand and respect the importance of that role.
Who owns the dog during the Guardian period?
During the Guardian period, Misty Creek Rose retains legal ownership and breeding rights as outlined in the Guardian Agreement.
The dog lives with the Guardian Family as their family companion. Once the breeding obligations are completed and all contractual requirements are met, ownership is transferred fully to the Guardian Family.
At what age are Guardian Dogs used for breeding?
At Misty Creek Rose, our dogs are never rushed into breeding.
Female breeding dogs are not bred until they are a minimum of 18 months of age, and only once they have reached appropriate maturity, passed required health testing, and are considered physically and emotionally ready.
Male breeding dogs may be used from 12 months of age, provided they have met the required health, temperament, fertility, and program suitability expectations.
In all cases, breeding decisions are guided by the dog’s wellbeing, maturity, veterinary guidance, health results, and the long-term goals of our breeding program. 🐾
How many litters will a female Guardian Dog have?
Most Misty Creek Rose females will have two litters in their lifetime.
In some circumstances, and only where it is appropriate for the dog’s health and wellbeing, a female may have a third litter. This will always be guided by the dog’s welfare, veterinary advice, and the terms of the Guardian Agreement.
Female Guardian Dogs are not bred before 18 months of age, and only once health, maturity, temperament, and program suitability requirements have been met.
What happens when my female Guardian Dog has puppies?
When your Guardian Girl is due to be bred, whelp, and raise her litter, she will return to Misty Creek Rose for the required period.
She will be cared for by us throughout the breeding, pregnancy, birth, and puppy-raising process. Once her puppies are weaned and she is ready to return home, she goes back to her Guardian Family.
Where appropriate, Guardian Families may be invited to be involved in parts of the whelping and puppy-raising journey, provided they follow our required hygiene and sanitisation protocols.
We understand this temporary separation can be emotional, and we do our best to support our guardians through the process with communication, updates, and reassurance.
How long is a female away when she has a litter?
This can vary depending on the timing of her season, breeding, pregnancy, whelping, and weaning.
Generally, a female will be with Misty Creek Rose for breeding-related appointments and then again for whelping and raising her litter.
The exact timeframes will be explained clearly in the Guardian Agreement and discussed with the Guardian Family.
What about male Guardian Dogs?
Male Guardian Dogs may be required for semen collection or breeding appointments during their breeding career.
This usually involves shorter visits compared to females. Male guardians must be available and flexible when breeding-related appointments are required.
Male breeding dogs may be used from 12 months of age, provided they have met the required health, temperament, fertility, and program suitability expectations.
Male guardians also need to be mindful of diet, supplements, and lifestyle factors that can affect fertility and semen quality.
Do I need to live nearby?
Yes. Location is very important.
As a general guide:
| Guardian Dog | Preferred Distance |
| Female Guardian Homes | Within approx. 1–1.5 hours of Yatala, QLD |
| Male Guardian Homes | Within approx. 1 hour of Yatala, QLD |
This is because breeding appointments, health checks, progesterone testing, semen collection, mating windows, and whelping timing can be time-sensitive.
What are the main responsibilities of a Guardian Family?
Guardian Families are expected to:
- Provide a safe, loving, stable home environment
- Follow the care, feeding, grooming, and health requirements
- Keep the dog well-socialised, well-mannered, and appropriately trained
- Attend required veterinary, health testing, breeding, grooming, or training appointments
- Provide monthly updates and photos
- Communicate promptly with Misty Creek Rose
- Notify us immediately of illness, injury, behavioural concerns, season changes, or major life changes
- Follow all terms of the Guardian Agreement
A Guardian Dog represents the future of our breeding program, so care, communication, and reliability are very important.
Are monthly updates required?
Yes. Monthly updates are a requirement of our Guardian Program.
These updates help us stay connected, monitor the wellbeing and development of each dog, and keep accurate records for future planning.
Updates do not need to be formal. A few photos and a short note about how your dog is going is perfect.
Updates may include:
- Weight and general health
- Training progress
- Behaviour and temperament
- Grooming updates
- Photos or short videos
- Any concerns or changes
Is TASAA training mandatory for Guardian Dogs?
Yes. All Misty Creek Rose Guardian Dogs are required to complete the TASAA Puppy Stay & Train Program with Therapy & Support Animals Australia.
This training requirement is an important part of our Guardian Program, as it helps provide each Guardian Dog with a strong foundation in manners, confidence, responsiveness, early development, and appropriate handling.
At Misty Creek Rose, we believe training is not just about obedience — it is about helping a dog grow into a calm, confident, emotionally steady, well-mannered companion.
How does the TASAA training reimbursement work?
To support our Guardian Families with this commitment, Misty Creek Rose will reimburse 20% of the TASAA Puppy Stay & Train Program cost once one of the following has been completed:
- The Guardian Family provides a suitable video of the puppy going through their training paces, which will be assessed by TASAA; or
- The Guardian Dog is enrolled in and successfully completes the TASAA Intensive Obedience Program.
Please note that the cost of the TASAA Intensive Obedience Program is borne by the Guardian Family.
This requirement ensures that each Guardian Dog continues to develop in a consistent, supported, and structured way, while giving families clear guidance to continue their dog’s training in the right manner.
Why is training so important?
Australian Cobberdogs are known for their human focus, emotional intelligence, trainability, and therapy-suitable qualities.
However, these traits still need to be nurtured through structure, consistency, exposure, and appropriate training.
Training helps your Guardian Dog become:
- Calm and settled
- Confident in new environments
- Responsive to handlers
- Well-mannered in the home and community
- Easier to manage during grooming, vet visits, travel, and breeding-related appointments
- Better prepared for everyday family life
Training does not replace the important role of the family. It provides a strong foundation and gives families a guide to continue their dog’s training in the right manner.
Who pays for food, grooming, vet care, and everyday costs?
The Guardian Family is responsible for normal day-to-day ownership costs.
This generally includes:
- Food
- Routine vet care
- Grooming
- Parasite prevention
- Council registration
- General supplies
- Pet insurance, where required or recommended
- Training obligations, including the TASAA Intensive Obedience Program if required
Misty Creek Rose is responsible for approved breeding-related costs, unless otherwise stated in the Guardian Agreement.
The exact financial responsibilities will be clearly outlined before placement.
Who pays for desexing?
The Guardian Family is usually responsible for arranging and paying for desexing once written approval or instruction is provided by Misty Creek Rose.
Desexing must not be done without written permission from Misty Creek Rose during the Guardian period.
Once breeding obligations are complete, and the dog has been desexed as required, full ownership can be transferred to the Guardian Family in accordance with the Guardian Agreement.
Can I choose the colour or gender of a Guardian Dog?
Guardian opportunities depend on what our breeding program requires.
While preferences may be discussed, Guardian Dogs are selected first and foremost for:
- Temperament
- Health
- Structure
- Genetics
- Breed type
- Emotional stability
- Breeding potential
- Suitability for the Guardian Family
At Misty Creek Rose, we do not breed for colour. Mother Nature determines gender, colour, markings, and final coat expression.
Our priority is always the right dog, the right temperament, and the right match — not simply a particular colour or look.
Can Guardian Dogs go to dog parks?
This will depend on the individual dog and the terms of the agreement.
As a general rule, we are cautious with dog parks due to the risk of injury, illness, uncontrolled dogs, and poor social experiences.
Guardian Dogs are valuable future breeding dogs, so their safety is extremely important.
Controlled socialisation, structured outings, training environments, and safe play with known suitable dogs are preferred.
Can my Guardian Dog live with other dogs?
Possibly, but this depends on the household, the other dog’s temperament, desexing status, age, and the specific Guardian Dog being placed.
Homes with entire dogs may not be suitable, particularly for female Guardian Dogs.
This will be assessed case by case to ensure the safety, wellbeing, and suitability of the placement.
Can my Guardian Dog be around children?
Yes, suitable family homes with children may be considered.
However, children must be respectful, gentle, and supervised around the dog. Guardian Dogs need calm, positive handling and a safe environment where they can rest, mature, and develop confidently.
A Guardian Dog should be treated as both a beloved family member and an important future part of our breeding program.
Can I travel with my Guardian Dog?
Travel may be possible, but it must be discussed with Misty Creek Rose, especially if the dog is entire and still under breeding contract.
Guardians must not travel in a way that interferes with breeding, health testing, seasons, pregnancy timing, or required appointments.
Any extended travel or relocation must be disclosed and approved.
What happens if I move house?
You must notify Misty Creek Rose before moving.
Because distance and access are important to the Guardian Program, relocation may affect the arrangement, especially if the move places the dog too far away for breeding-related responsibilities.
Any major household or lifestyle changes should be communicated promptly.
What happens if I can no longer keep the Guardian Dog?
You must contact Misty Creek Rose immediately.
Guardian Dogs cannot be sold, rehomed, transferred, or given to another person without written approval from Misty Creek Rose.
The dog must return to Misty Creek Rose or be managed according to the Guardian Agreement.
What happens if the dog does not pass health testing?
Not every potential breeding dog will go on to become part of the breeding program.
If a Guardian Dog does not pass health testing or is deemed unsuitable for breeding, Misty Creek Rose will determine the next steps.
In many cases, the dog may be desexed and ownership transferred to the Guardian Family earlier than expected, depending on the agreement.
The dog’s wellbeing will always come first.
What happens when the breeding agreement is finished?
Once the Guardian Dog has completed their breeding obligations, and all contractual requirements have been fulfilled, the dog will be desexed as directed and full ownership will transfer to the Guardian Family.
At that point, the dog remains with the family as their forever companion.
This is the beautiful goal of our Guardian Program — a loved dog, raised in a family home from the beginning, who contributes carefully and meaningfully to the future of the breed before becoming fully owned by the family who has loved them all along. 🤍
Is the Guardian Program right for everyone?
No. And that is okay.
The Guardian Program is a beautiful opportunity, but it is not the right fit for every family.
It suits families who are:
- Reliable
- Communicative
- Flexible
- Committed to training
- Comfortable with contractual responsibilities
- Able to follow breeder guidance
- Emotionally prepared for temporary breeding-related absences
- Genuinely supportive of the Misty Creek Rose breeding program
For families wanting a puppy with no breeding-related obligations, traditional pet adoption may be the better option.
What kind of families make the best Guardian Homes?
The best Guardian Homes are families who understand that they are becoming part of something bigger than simply owning a dog.
They are families who value the breed, respect the purpose of responsible breeding, communicate openly, and take pride in raising a dog who may contribute to future generations.
A wonderful Guardian Family sees their dog as both a beloved family member and a treasured part of our Misty Creek Rose program.
How do I apply to become a Guardian Home?
The first step is to complete our Guardian Enquiry or Application Form.
From there, we will review your suitability, location, household, lifestyle, experience, training commitment, and whether we have a Guardian Dog who may be the right match.
If your application appears suitable, we may arrange a phone conversation or meeting to discuss the program in more detail.
Guardian placements are never rushed. Our priority is always the right home, the right dog, and the right long-term partnership.
Closing Note
Becoming a Guardian Family is a meaningful partnership built on trust, communication, shared responsibility, and a genuine love for the Australian Cobberdog.
Our Guardian Dogs are deeply important to us. They are not just part of our breeding program — they are part of our heart, our future, and the legacy we are carefully building at Misty Creek Rose. For the right family, the Guardian journey can be incredibly special — a chance to love one of our dogs as your own, while also being part of something purposeful, ethical, and deeply connected. 🤍🐾
