Welcoming a puppy into your family is a wonderful commitment — and one that extends far beyond the initial cost of bringing your puppy home. At Misty Creek Rose Australian Cobberdogs, we believe responsible ownership also means being financially prepared for the unexpected.
We can carefully plan our breeding program, undertake extensive health testing, raise our puppies thoughtfully and provide families with strong foundations. But no breeder, owner or veterinarian can guarantee that a dog will never become sick or have an accident.
Puppies are curious. Dogs play, explore, run, jump and occasionally eat things they absolutely should not. Accidents can happen, and unexpected illness can occur even in a well-bred, well-cared-for dog.
When Veterinary Care Becomes an Unexpected Financial Burden
Veterinary medicine can provide extraordinary levels of care, but emergency treatment can also become expensive very quickly. An emergency consultation may lead to diagnostic testing, imaging, specialist referral, surgery, medication or hospitalisation. For a family already worried about their dog, the financial pressure of an unexpected veterinary bill can add another layer of stress.
“When your dog needs care, we want the question to be: What does my dog need? — not: Can we afford the treatment?”
This is why we advocate for pet insurance. Insurance cannot prevent an accident or illness, but appropriate cover can help reduce the financial burden of eligible veterinary treatment when the unexpected happens.
Responsible Breeding Does Not Remove the Need for Insurance
At Misty Creek Rose, health testing and responsible breeding are central to our program. However, health testing is not the same as a lifetime guarantee against every possible illness or injury. Genetic screening cannot prevent a puppy from swallowing a foreign object, sustaining an accidental injury or developing an unrelated medical condition.
Responsible breeding and responsible ownership work together. For us, encouraging families to consider pet insurance is part of helping them prepare for the lifetime responsibility of caring for their dog.
Misty Creek Rose and the Trupanion Breeder Support Program
Misty Creek Rose is proud to be part of the Trupanion Breeder Support Program. Through the program, eligible puppy families can access Trupanion’s Go Home Day Opportunity, providing 30 days of free cover for new injuries and illnesses when the policy is validly activated within the required timeframe, subject to the current offer and policy terms.
Trupanion currently states that the breeder offer can provide 30 days of free cover with no waiting periods, and that eligible claims may cover 90% of eligible veterinary costs for new injuries and illnesses, with no payout limits or sub-limits, subject to policy terms and exclusions. Trupanion also offers direct-to-vet claims through GapOnly® at participating veterinary hospitals.
Why Early Cover Matters
Pet insurance is something we encourage families to consider before they need it. Conditions that occur, begin or show signs before cover starts may be treated as pre-existing and may not be covered. Starting appropriate cover while a puppy is young and healthy can therefore be an important part of planning for the years ahead.
The complimentary 30-day opportunity is a starting point, not a substitute for considering your puppy’s long-term insurance needs. Families should review the Product Disclosure Statement and policy documents and decide whether Trupanion — or any insurance product — is appropriate for their own objectives, financial situation and needs.
A Lifetime Commitment
We hope every Misty Creek Rose puppy enjoys a long, healthy life with very few reasons to visit a veterinary hospital beyond routine care. But responsible ownership also means preparing for the days we hope never come.
An emergency does not make an appointment. An accident does not check whether the timing is financially convenient. Having suitable pet insurance can provide families with an additional financial safety net when their dog needs them most.

Frequently Asked Questions — Pet Insurance for Your Misty Creek Rose Puppy
Why does Misty Creek Rose advocate for pet insurance?
We know that accidents and unexpected illnesses can happen even when a puppy has been responsibly bred and carefully raised. Insurance can help reduce the financial impact of eligible veterinary treatment and allow families to focus more fully on their dog’s care.
Does health testing mean my puppy will never become sick?
No. Responsible health and genetic testing helps breeders manage known risks, but it cannot prevent every future illness or accidental injury. Health testing and pet insurance serve different purposes.
Is Misty Creek Rose part of a Trupanion breeder program?
Yes. Misty Creek Rose participates in the Trupanion Breeder Support Program, which allows eligible puppy families to access Trupanion’s Go Home Day Opportunity, subject to Trupanion’s current eligibility, activation and policy terms.
What is the Trupanion Go Home Day Opportunity?
Trupanion currently offers eligible puppies 30 days of free pet insurance when a Trupanion policy is validly activated within 24 hours of the puppy going home. The offer is subject to Trupanion’s current terms and conditions and policy eligibility.
Do I need to provide payment details for the 30-day offer?
Under Trupanion’s current offer terms, no premium instalment is charged and payment details are not required for the initial 30-day offer. If you choose to continue the policy after the offer expires, monthly premiums apply.
Does the 30-day cover automatically continue?
No. Families should follow Trupanion’s instructions regarding activation and continuation. If you wish to maintain insurance after the complimentary period, you will need to arrange ongoing cover in accordance with Trupanion’s current terms.
Why is it important to arrange insurance early?
Pet insurance generally excludes pre-existing conditions. A condition that occurs, begins or shows signs before the policy commencement date may affect future coverage. This is why we encourage families to consider insurance while their puppy is young and healthy.
Does Trupanion pay every veterinary bill?
No. Insurance policies have terms, exclusions and eligibility requirements. Trupanion’s cover relates to eligible costs for covered injuries and illnesses. Routine and preventative ownership costs may not be covered. Always read the applicable PDS and Certificate of Insurance.
Can Trupanion pay the veterinarian directly?
Trupanion states that eligible claims can be paid directly to participating veterinary hospitals through GapOnly®, which may mean the owner pays their portion rather than paying the entire eligible bill upfront and waiting for reimbursement.
Do I have to stay with Trupanion?
No. Misty Creek Rose advocates for families having appropriate pet insurance, but the choice of insurer and policy is yours. We encourage you to compare cover carefully and select insurance that is appropriate for your circumstances.
Is pet insurance a replacement for an emergency savings fund?
Not necessarily. Even insured families may still have an excess, co-payment, excluded expenses or costs outside the accepted claim amount. Maintaining some accessible emergency funds alongside insurance can provide an additional layer of financial preparedness.
